How to replace an all-terrain tyre, tube or split hub

Most riders assume that anything wheel-related on an electric skateboard means a trip to the shop or a wait for parts to be posted out. For all-terrain tyres, that is not quite true. The tyre, tube and hub on an Evolve pneumatic wheel are genuinely serviceable at home, provided you understand how the hub goes together and you are not rushing the job.

This matters more if you ride a board built entirely around all-terrain wheels, like the Renegade Diablo. There is no street wheel option to fall back on here. The pneumatic tyre is the only contact point between your board and the trail, so knowing how to swap a tube or replace a worn tyre is worth understanding properly rather than guessing at.

What you are actually working with

An Evolve all-terrain wheel is built from three parts: the outer tyre, an inflatable inner tube, and a two-piece hub that clamps around both. The hub halves are held together with six screws that pass through one side and thread into six nuts captured in the opposite half. Each hub half has a notch cut for the tube valve, and those two notches need to line up when you put everything back together.

It sounds fiddly written out, but once you have the wheel apart in front of you, the logic is straightforward. The tricky part is not the mechanics, it is discipline: keeping the tube seated correctly and not rushing the reassembly.

Getting the wheel off and open

Before anything else, remove the wheel from the board using the wheel-removal method appropriate to your model. Once it is off, let all the air out of the tube fully before you touch the hub screws. Trying to separate a hub while there is still pressure in the tube is asking for trouble.

Lay the wheel flat on a bench or table. This is not just tidiness, it keeps those six captured nuts sitting in their recesses in the lower hub half. Stand the wheel on its edge while you are undoing screws and there is a real chance a nut drops out and you are hunting for it on the floor.

Using a 1/8-inch Allen key, loosen all six hub screws fully. You can leave them sitting loosely in the upper hub half rather than removing them completely, which saves you re-threading six screws later. With the wheel still lying flat, work your fingers in around the hub and lift the upper half away, then push down gently on the lower half to release it from the tyre. From there the inner tube pulls straight out.

Deciding what actually needs replacing

Sometimes it is just the tube that has let go and the tyre is perfectly fine to reuse. Other times the tyre itself has worn through and needs swapping, in which case the tube can usually be kept if it is still holding air properly. Either way, the process from here is the same regardless of which part you are replacing.

Fitting the tube and reassembling the hub

Put a small amount of air into the replacement tube, just enough to give it shape without inflating it properly. This makes it far easier to work evenly into the tyre rather than fighting a floppy tube around the inside edge. Take your time here and check the tube sits fully inside the tyre with no part of it bulging out near where the tyre bead meets the hub.

This is the step where people rush and pay for it later. If any part of the tube is caught in the area where the two hub halves clamp together, tightening the hub down will pinch it, and you will be back to square one with another flat. Check it properly before you go any further.

Line the tube valve up with the valve notch in the lower hub half and seat the tyre into that half. Bring the upper hub half down over the top, matching its own valve notch to the same valve, and check the six screw holes line up with the captured nuts below. Press the two halves together and start each screw by hand before tightening anything fully.

Tighten the six screws gradually and in a crisscross pattern, not one at a time in sequence. This draws the hub closed evenly rather than cranking one side down while the other stays loose, which is how you end up with a wheel that sits slightly off. If a screw ever spins without biting, stop and check that the captured nut on the other side has not popped out of its recess. Push it back into place and try again.

Once the hub is fully closed, inflate the tyre. Evolve's own guidance for these wheels sits at 45 PSI for the best range, which is worth sticking to rather than eyeballing it.

Why this matters more on a board built for the trail

The Renegade Diablo is not a board that spends much time on smooth footpaths. It is built with the widest stance in the Evolve range and genuine off-road capability, which means the tyres are doing real work over gravel, dirt and uneven ground. Riders pushing it hard through the trails behind the Gold Coast hinterland, the fire roads around Perth's outer suburbs, or mixed terrain out past Melbourne's eastern fringe are going to wear a tyre and occasionally pinch a tube faster than someone cruising sealed paths in Sydney or Brisbane. That is simply the trade-off for a board that can go where street wheels cannot.

Knowing how to get a wheel apart, sort the tube or tyre, and put it back together properly means a puncture does not turn into a weekend without your board. It also means you are not paying for a workshop visit every time a tube gives out.
