Electric skateboard riding modes explained

Every Evolve board ships with multiple riding modes, and understanding them is the difference between a frustrating first session and genuinely fast progression. Modes control how aggressively the board accelerates, how hard it brakes and how much of the motor's power is available at any given moment. Get them right and the board feels intuitive. Ignore them and you're either crawling when you want to fly, or getting launched off the tail on your first ride.

What riding modes actually do

Riding modes are not just speed limiters. They shape the entire character of the board by adjusting throttle sensitivity, acceleration curves and braking strength simultaneously.

On the Diablo Carbon 2-in-1, this is managed through the EFOC 2.0 motor controller paired with the Phaze remote. The result is a system that feels completely different depending on which mode you're in, even though the hardware underneath is identical.

Think of it like driving a car with different traction control settings. The engine is the same, but the way it delivers power to the road changes everything about how it feels.

ECO mode: where most riders should start

ECO mode reduces the available power output and softens the acceleration curve. The board still moves at a reasonable pace, but it gives you time to find your balance and understand how the remote responds to small inputs.

This is particularly useful if you're newer to electric skateboarding or if you're riding on unfamiliar terrain. Braking in ECO is also gentler, which matters when you're still learning how your body weight shifts when the board decelerates.

It also extends your range. On a long coastal path or an extended commute, ECO lets the 864Wh battery stretch further by keeping power draw more consistent.

SPORT mode: the everyday setting

Once you're comfortable with the board's weight and response, SPORT mode is where most riders settle in for everyday use. Acceleration is sharper, top speed increases and the board starts to feel like a proper performance machine.

This is the mode that suits most urban riding situations. In Melbourne, where long flat stretches let you build up speed confidently, SPORT handles the transition between riding fast and carving into a stop without drama. In Brisbane, where riverside paths mix pedestrian traffic with open sections, the added responsiveness in SPORT helps you manage your speed with precision.

CORSA mode: full power

CORSA mode unlocks the full capability of the board. On the Diablo Carbon, that means access to the complete 7000W of combined motor output, with an aggressive throttle response that reflects it.

At 50 km/h on a rigid carbon deck with SuperCarve 2 trucks, the board feels planted and stable in a way that genuinely earns that speed. The forged carbon fibre deck has zero flex, which means energy transfers directly into acceleration without any deck movement absorbing the force. For experienced riders, this is where the Diablo Carbon lives.

CORSA is not for crowded paths or cautious days. It suits open roads, long bike lanes and riders who have already built trust with the board at lower settings.

Custom mode: tune it to how you actually ride

The Explore by Evolve app adds a fourth layer. Custom mode lets you dial in your own acceleration sensitivity and braking strength independently, sitting anywhere between the preset modes.

This is genuinely useful. A rider in Sydney navigating steep downhill sections near the Harbour might want strong regenerative braking with moderate acceleration. A rider on flat Perth bike paths might prefer smooth acceleration with softer braking for a more relaxed feel. Custom mode handles both without needing a new board.

It's also useful for progressive learning. You can start in ECO, build confidence, then nudge the acceleration curve up incrementally through Custom before committing to SPORT or CORSA.

Switching modes while riding

Mode changes happen through the Phaze remote without stopping. The LCD screen on the remote confirms your current mode, and the board responds immediately when you switch.

The practical value of this is real. Riders on the Gold Coast who start a session on flat beachside paths might switch from SPORT to CORSA when they hit an open stretch, then drop back to ECO when the path gets busier. You are never locked into a single behaviour for the whole ride.

How modes interact with wheel setup

The Diablo Carbon 2-in-1 includes both 97mm street wheels and 175mm all-terrain pneumatic tyres. Switching between them changes the character of every mode.

On street wheels, CORSA at 50 km/h is fast and precise. On AT tyres, the same mode feels more forgiving because the pneumatic tyres absorb surface irregularities and the board's top speed sits slightly lower due to the rolling resistance of the larger tyre. ECO on AT wheels, particularly on gravel or grass, is a comfortable and controlled place to be while you learn the terrain.

This interaction between mode and wheel type means the 2-in-1 configuration gives you more than just two wheel options. It effectively doubles the range of riding experiences available.

Which mode should you default to?

Start in ECO, move to SPORT when the board feels familiar, and treat CORSA as something you earn rather than jump straight into. Custom mode is worth exploring once you understand how each preset feels, because the ability to fine-tune your own curve adds a level of personalisation that most boards simply do not offer.

For heavier riders, the Diablo Carbon's 120 kg capacity and rigid platform mean the board handles power delivery consistently across all modes without the deck flex that can make acceleration feel unpredictable on bamboo setups.

If you want to see how the modes feel in practice before committing, the Evolve store at Mermaid Waters, QLD offers the chance to experience the board in person.

The Diablo Carbon 2-in-1 is the board that makes the most of this mode system. The rigid deck, high-output motors and included wheel sets give every mode a distinct, purposeful feel rather than just a number on a screen.
