How to store and care for your electric skateboard battery

The battery is the most expensive component on your board. Treat it well and it will hold capacity for years. Neglect it and you will notice range dropping off faster than it should, with replacement costs that sting.

Most battery degradation is not caused by riding. It is caused by how the board is stored between rides. A few straightforward habits will protect your investment and keep performance consistent for the long term.

Temperature is the biggest factor most riders overlook

Lithium cells degrade faster when stored in heat. A garage in Perth or Brisbane that climbs past 35 degrees through summer is a hostile environment for a battery sitting at full charge. Equally, leaving your board in a cold car overnight in Melbourne or on a Canberra-level winter morning accelerates wear from the other direction.

The practical fix is simple: store your board indoors, away from direct sunlight and away from temperature extremes. A cupboard, spare room or under a desk works well. You are not looking for climate control, just a stable room temperature environment.

What charge level to store at

If you are not riding for a while, do not leave the battery fully charged. Lithium cells held at 100 per cent for extended periods experience a form of stress that compounds over time. The recommended storage charge is 40 to 50 per cent.

For most riders, this is not something to obsess over if you are riding every few days. Top it up, ride, let it come down naturally. The storage guidance matters most when you are leaving the board untouched for weeks or months, during travel, between seasons or when the board is sitting spare.

If you are storing long term, check the charge every four to six weeks. If it has dropped below 30 per cent, bring it back up to around 40 to 50 per cent before leaving it again. A completely flat battery left for months will cause permanent cell damage that cannot be reversed.

Charging habits that extend battery life

Use the official Evolve charger. Third-party chargers may not communicate correctly with the battery management system, and the risk is not worth the saving. The BMS on current Evolve boards is there to protect the cells, but it works best with the charger it was designed for.

Do not leave the board plugged in indefinitely after it reaches full charge. The Diablo Carbon Street ships with a 5A fast charger that brings the 864Wh battery to full in around four hours. Once it is done, unplug it. Trickle charging at full capacity over long periods contributes to degradation.

Charge at room temperature where possible. Charging a cold battery pushes current into cells that are not at optimal operating temperature. If your board has been sitting in a cold car or cool shed, give it 20 to 30 minutes to come up to room temperature before plugging in.

The board you want to protect

The Diablo Carbon Street carries an 864Wh Samsung 50S battery, one of the largest in any production electric skateboard. That is what enables up to 80 km of real-world range on street wheels. Protecting that battery is not just about longevity, it is about keeping the performance consistent at kilometre 60 the same way it feels at kilometre 10.

The forged carbon deck keeps the board at 13.15 kg, lighter than the bamboo equivalent, and the integrated CNC heatsink helps manage thermal load from the motors and electronics during hard riding. Good post-ride habits, letting the board cool down before storing it away, matter here too. Putting a warm board straight into a bag or enclosed space slows heat dissipation.

What to do before a long break

If you are heading away from Sydney for a few weeks or the board is going on the shelf while you travel, run through this before you put it away.

  • Ride or discharge to around 40 to 50 per cent charge
  • Wipe the board down and remove any grit or moisture from the deck and wheels
  • Check tyre pressure if you run street wheels, or bearing condition if applicable
  • Store the remote with some battery life remaining, not fully flat
  • Keep everything at room temperature, away from sunlight and humidity

When you come back to it, check the battery level before riding. If it has dropped significantly, charge it back up before putting load through the motors.

Water and moisture

Evolve boards are not waterproof. Current models including the Diablo have improved sealing with extra lip seals and thicker battery casing for splash resistance, but riding through puddles or in wet conditions is not recommended. Water damage is not covered under warranty.

In coastal cities like the Gold Coast, humidity is worth keeping in mind even when it is not raining. Storing a board in a damp garage or shed over summer is not ideal. Keep it inside where air circulation and temperature are more consistent.

Signs the battery needs attention

Range dropping noticeably over a short period is the most obvious signal. If a route that used to take 30 per cent charge now takes 45 per cent, that is worth investigating. Some reduction over years of use is normal, but a sudden or steep drop suggests a cell issue, a charging problem or a storage issue that has compounded.

Swelling in the battery casing, unusual heat during charging or the board refusing to hold charge at all are more serious signs. Stop riding and contact the Evolve team. The service team at the Mermaid Waters store in Queensland can diagnose battery issues and advise on next steps.

The short version

Store at 40 to 50 per cent charge for anything longer than a few days of downtime. Keep the board at room temperature. Use the official charger. Unplug when full. Let the board cool before storing after a long session. These habits cost nothing and preserve the part of the board that is most expensive to replace.

The battery in the Diablo Carbon Street is built to last, but it performs best when it is looked after. A little consistency in how you store and charge adds up to years of reliable range.
