How to replace and tension an electric skateboard drive belt
Most riders only think about their drive belt once something feels off underfoot, usually a clicking or skipping sound when they brake hard. The belt is doing more mechanical work than most people realise, and understanding how it actually connects the motor to the wheel makes the whole tensioning process far less confusing.
The drive path is simpler than it looks from underneath
Pull the belt cover off any Evolve belt-driven board and the layout is the same story repeated twice, once for each rear wheel. The motor spins a small pulley. A toothed belt loops around that pulley and around a larger drive gear sitting on the rear axle. Raised lugs on the wheel-facing side of the drive gear engage matching spaces inside the wheel hub, and that engagement is what actually makes the wheel turn.
It is worth being precise here because it is a common misunderstanding. The motor does not sit inside the wheel and the wheel is not driven directly off the motor shaft. The drive gear and the wheel hub are two separate parts that only work together once the wheel is fitted correctly onto the axle.
What a poorly tensioned belt actually feels like
Tension problems show up in two opposite ways. A belt that is too tight adds friction and load through the drive system, which can reduce range and may damage board components over time. A belt that is too loose can click or skip across the teeth of the drive gear under hard braking. That clicking sound is a possible sign of a loose belt, and it is something you will notice while riding rather than something you need to go looking for.
Correct tension sits between those two extremes. Evolve's tensioning process aims for approximately 5 mm of play in the belt, checked with the wheel fitted, along with a wheel that still spins freely when you turn it by hand. Those two checks together are what confirm correct tension. Neither one on its own tells you enough.
Checking and adjusting tension without overcomplicating it
The process is the same in principle across Evolve's belt-driven range, from GTR through to Fusion and Diablo, even though the exact drive gear and belt dimensions differ between models. Two tools cover the whole job: a Y-tool, using its medium socket on the wheel nuts, and a 1/8-inch Allen key for the belt cover bolts and the four motor-mounting bolts.
Start by removing the rear wheel, then take out the two belt cover bolts with the Allen key and lift the cover away. Rotate the drive gear while pulling it away from the axle and lift it off together with the belt. The four motor-mounting bolts sit in slotted mounts on the motor plate. Loosen each one by roughly half a turn to a full turn, without removing them, and the motor will slide backwards and forwards in those slots. That movement is what actually changes belt tension.
When you refit the drive gear, whether it is the original or a replacement, push and gently wiggle it onto the axle until the drive-gear bearing seats flush inside the gear. A bearing that is not seated properly will throw off your tension reading, so it is worth checking before you go any further.
The wheel is then temporarily refitted before you take a tension reading. A wheel pulls the drive gear straight and gives a more accurate reading than checking with the wheel off. Nudge the motor, refit the wheel, check for approximately 5 mm of play in the belt, then pull the wheel back off if you need to make another small adjustment. It takes a bit of back and forth to get right.
Once the tension feels right with the wheel on, fully tighten all four motor bolts, then refit the belt cover. Before the wheel goes back on for good, confirm there is a wheel bearing sitting on each side of the wheel, not just the one nearer the drive gear. Fit the wheel and thread on the wheel nut, tightening it until it bites, then back it off by approximately one-eighth of a turn. Check that axle thread is still visible beyond the nylon locknut before you consider the job done. Spin the wheel by hand to confirm it turns freely, then take the board for a cautious, low-speed ride rather than testing it under hard braking straight away. If the belt is still skipping or clicking under braking during that ride, the tension needs another look.
Replacing a worn belt follows the same logic
Swapping in a new belt of the same specification follows the same sequence, with the correct replacement belt for your model fitted in place of the old one. Remove the wheel, cover, gear and old belt exactly as above, fit the replacement belt around the motor pulley and the correct drive gear, then rotate the gear to seat the belt fully onto its teeth and confirm the drive-gear bearing sits flush before you check tension.
From there, the process is identical. Temporarily refit the wheel to check for that 5 mm of play, adjust the motor position if the fresh belt sits outside that target, then fully tighten the motor bolts, confirm both wheel bearings are in place, and finish with the same wheel nut sequence, tightened until it bites and backed off by about one-eighth of a turn, with axle thread still visible beyond the nylon locknut. A like-for-like replacement does not automatically mean you need to move the motor. Only adjust its position if the fresh belt sits outside that 5 mm target once it is fitted.
No specific torque figure is supplied for the motor mounting bolts, because that is not something we will guess at. If you are unsure whether you have got it right, that is a reasonable question to put to Evolve support rather than a risk worth taking on your own judgement.
Where belt tension matters on an all-terrain setup
All-terrain tyres create more rolling resistance than street wheels, simply due to the tyre itself rather than anything about the drivetrain underneath. The Diablo Bamboo All Terrain runs the same dual motor and belt-drive layout described above, fitted with 175mm pneumatic tyres in place of street wheels. Understanding how that drivetrain is tensioned applies just the same whether you are running street or all-terrain wheels.
A final word on doing it yourself
Belt tensioning is one of the more approachable pieces of maintenance on an electric skateboard, and understanding the drive path removes a lot of the mystery around it. But there is a real difference between checking and adjusting tension on a belt you already understand, and stripping down a drivetrain without a clear reference for hardware or tightness. If you are ever unsure, it is worth raising it with Evolve support before you ride on it. Getting the tension right is worth the extra care, since it affects how the board rides every time you accelerate or brake.
