Bamboo vs carbon deck: which is right for you?

Bamboo vs carbon deck: which is right for you?

The deck material on your electric skateboard affects how it feels underfoot, how it handles at speed and how forgiving it is on rough ground. Bamboo gives you flex and a surfy, natural carve feel. Carbon is rigid, stable and confidence-inspiring at higher speeds. Which one suits you comes down to how you ride and where you ride it.

Both materials appear across the Evolve lineup, and the difference between them is not just cosmetic. It changes the character of the board in ways that matter on real roads and paths.

What bamboo actually feels like

Bamboo decks have a natural flex that absorbs vibration as you ride. That softness underfoot makes the board feel more like a traditional longboard, which is part of why riders coming from a surf or skate background tend to love it. Turns feel intuitive. Carving feels alive.

The flex also acts as a buffer on rough surfaces. Cracked footpaths, road joins and bitumen texture all transmit less shock through a bamboo deck than a rigid platform. On longer rides, that makes a genuine difference to how your legs feel at the end of a session.

The trade-off is at higher speeds. Flex that feels great at 30 km/h can start to feel less planted at 45 km/h, particularly for heavier riders or anyone pushing the board harder. Bamboo is not unstable, but it rewards a more relaxed riding style.

What carbon changes

A carbon fibre deck removes flex almost entirely. The platform is solid, predictable and does not move under your feet regardless of speed. For riders who like to push to the upper end of the speed range, that rigidity is a significant confidence boost.

Carbon also tends to be lighter than the equivalent bamboo setup. On the Diablo, the Carbon Street weighs 13.15 kg compared to 14.1 kg for the Bamboo Street. That difference is noticeable when you are carrying the board, and it contributes to a slightly more direct response when accelerating or braking.

The Diablo Carbon also features an integrated CNC heatsink built into the deck, which helps manage motor and electronics temperature during extended or demanding rides. For riders who regularly hit steep climbs or long sustained runs, that thermal management is worth knowing about.

On rough terrain, a rigid deck transmits more vibration. The all-terrain wheels on a carbon setup absorb much of that through the pneumatic tyres, but on street wheels over imperfect surfaces, you will feel the road more than you would on bamboo.

Who each deck suits

Bamboo is a strong fit if you:

  • Prioritise a smooth, surf-carve feel
  • Ride mostly at moderate speeds on familiar routes
  • Want a more forgiving board for longer sessions
  • Are coming from a skateboarding or longboarding background
  • Prefer a slightly more comfortable, flowing ride style

Carbon suits you better if you:

  • Ride at or near the top of the speed range regularly
  • Are a heavier rider and want a platform that feels planted
  • Want maximum precision and direct board response
  • Prefer a lighter board that still handles all terrain
  • Value the integrated heatsink for performance-intensive riding

The Diablo Carbon 2-in-1

If you want the carbon experience without having to commit to one terrain type, the Diablo Carbon 2-in-1 is the most versatile option in the current lineup. It ships with both 97mm urethane street wheels and 175mm pneumatic all-terrain tyres, so you can switch between setups depending on where you are riding that day.

The core specs are the same across both configurations. Dual 3500W motors, an 864Wh Samsung 50S battery, a 50 km/h top speed and a 45%+ hill gradient capability. On street wheels you get up to 80 km of real-world range. Switch to the all-terrain set and you are looking at up to 50 km, with the ability to take on grass, gravel and dirt comfortably.

The forged carbon deck keeps the board at 13.15 kg in street configuration, rising to 14.35 kg with the AT wheels fitted. For a board with this level of performance, that weight is competitive.

The maximum rider capacity is 120 kg, and the EFOC 2.0 controller delivers smooth throttle response and consistent braking across both wheel setups. The Phaze remote pairs easily and the Explore app lets you tune riding modes, acceleration curves and braking sensitivity to match your style.

Riding conditions worth considering

The carbon deck earns its place on varied terrain. In Sydney, where longer rides often mix smooth promenades with steeper residential streets, the stability at speed and strong hill performance make a real difference. Melbourne's bike lane network suits the street wheel setup well, particularly for riders who want to move efficiently on a lightweight board. In Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, where coastal paths and mixed surfaces are common, the ability to swap between wheel sets means you are not choosing between comfort and capability. Perth's long sealed stretches are where the 80 km street range genuinely shines.

A practical note on swapping wheels

Switching between street and all-terrain configurations requires more than just swapping wheels. You will need a full conversion kit that includes the appropriate drive gears and belts for each setup. The 2-in-1 package handles this by including both wheel sets ready to go, but keep in mind that the swap takes a few minutes and a Y-tool. It is not a tool-free quick change, but it is straightforward once you have done it a couple of times.

If you are near the Gold Coast, the Evolve store at Mermaid Waters is the best place to see both deck types in person and get a feel for the difference before you decide.

Which should you choose?

For most riders, bamboo is the more immediately enjoyable experience. It is forgiving, flows well and feels familiar. For riders who want to push the board harder, prioritise stability at speed or regularly carry and handle the board, carbon is the more capable platform.

The Diablo Carbon 2-in-1 sits at the top of the range for good reason. It gives you the precision of the carbon deck without locking you into a single terrain type. If you know you want the best Evolve has to offer and you want flexibility in how you use it, this is the board to start with.

If you want stability, lighter weight and the ability to ride anywhere, the Diablo Carbon 2-in-1 is the clearest choice in the lineup. If a softer, more flowing ride is what draws you to electric skating, the Diablo Bamboo delivers that in a way carbon simply cannot replicate.
