What Do Bushings Do On a Skateboard?

Put simply, the bushings on your skateboard have a huge influence on the way the board leans and the stability of the board on the straights. They’re a super cost-effective and easy mod to make to your board to help with the fine-tuning of your board's handling. Usually made from a form of urethane rubber, bushings are designed to compress and rebound similar to how shock absorbers do on a car. A standard bushing is generally made up of two parts. There’s the barrel part, which sits in the bushing seat, and then there’s the conical-shaped top part which encourages the board to lean, making carving up the street that much easier.

What Skateboard Bushings Do I Need?

Just like all accessories with electric skateboards, there’s a LOT of personal preference that goes into deciding what bushings to go for. While there’s no true substitute for trial and error, here’s a few things to think about regarding bushings and pivot cups. First, think of the bushings like they’re the suspension on a car. Then, think of how your board feels when you ride it now. Do you want a more direct feeling with more response from the board when you’re riding? More reaction to your steering inputs and leaning? If yes then that would steer you in the direction of a harder bushing. But what’s that? Do you feel like the board is too twitchy and you can feel too many of the bumps? Well, then it looks like some softer bushings might be just the thing you’re looking for. Something to also consider is the weight of the rider. If two people got on the same board but one weighed 47kgs and the other weighed 90kgs, they would notice very different handling on the board. The 90kgs person might find the bushings too soft and mushy. Whereas the 47kgs person might find them too hard and have difficulty making the board turn how they want it to. When Should I Replace My Skateboard Bushings?

Just like wheels, bushings are a consumable item on an electric skateboard. Eventually, you’re going to want to replace those lil fellas or else your ride quality will be negatively affected. If you inspect your board and notice any cracks or splits in the bushings or pivot cups, it’s time to change them. A few other early warning signs can be if your board starts to feel extra floppy when turning. Or if you start to get wheelbite, which is when your wheels grind the underside of your deck when cornering.
